Jokes can be told by anyone with some effort so that it
results in laughter. It is easy to ruin a good joke if one is not careful. At
the same time, if one is articulate, one can make people laugh with any joke.
One cannot predict the response of an audience to a joke but if you take the
following precautions in telling a joke, chances are there that people will
enjoy your narration.
Here is the ten best ways to tell a joke.
1. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of
the joke and you remember the joke. You can read the joke but that takes away
lots of fun.
2. It is a good idea to know your audience to see
whether they will enjoy the type of joke you are going to tell them. For
example, if the joke is targeted at Pakistani military leadership, it is
possible that some Pakistanis may not like the joke.
3. Don't create too much anticipation by announcing
that you are going to tell a great joke. It usually builds up the expectations
that cannot be sustained.
4. A joke should be told in a straightforward
manner without telling side stories that usually ruin a joke.
5. You should be relaxed and at ease when telling
jokes. It is all right to speak authoritatively and change the voice as you
tell a joke.
6. Raise your voice when you come to the punch
line.
7. Make sure that you yourself don't start laughing
or giggling before you have finished the punch line.
8. When you get a chance, practice your joke in
front of a couple of people before telling a larger audience. Many jokes cracked by me in parties were first told to two lady janitors who came to pick
up trash in my office! Nowadays, it is almost expected of me to tell jokes at
parties and other social gatherings.
9. When you tell a large gathering, please make
sure that everyone is absolutely quiet, otherwise many people will miss a part
of the joke or punch line and suddenly there will be uneasy silence rather than
a thunderous laughter!
10. If initially, you don't succeed in making people
laugh, practice, practice, practice! And, some day you will be a perfect Joker!
